Grown-Up Soda (GuS)

Grown-Up Soda (GuS)

Grown Up Soda (GuS) is based in New York City by Utmost Brands, Inc. It was created in 2003 by husband and wife Steve Hersh and Jeannette Luoh. Hersh’s father added seltzer to everything when he was growing up, so he was accustomed to drink lighter, less-sweet juices. Together, Hersh and Luoh decided to produce carbonated beverages made with real fruit juice, only lightly sweetened with cane sugar. Their aim was to come up with a refreshing soda list that wasn’t artificial like other soda brands, while still being full of life and flavor.

They were able to form GuS drinks, with each 12 oz bottle containing only 90-98 calories. With no caffeine, the bottled drinks are also pasteurized and kosher, with 40% less sugar than regular sodas. They pulled this off by creating small batches at a time, as the limited production bottling process ensured fresh raw materials, higher quality, and minimal inventory holding. The husband-and-wife team partnered with a bottler in Massachusetts, their humble beginning now turning into the product being on the shelves of large retailers.

GuS comes in nine flavor varieties: Star Ruby Grapefruit, Dry Pomegranate, Dry Valencia Orange, Dry Cranberry Lime, Dry Meyer Lemon, Dry Blackberry, Extra Dry Ginger Ale, Dry Cola, and Dry Root Beer. When Hersh and Luoh first began crafting their recipes, they started with only citrus juices and ginger ale. When they realized how delicious the mixtures were, they expanded to cola and root beer. Because of the intensive process, each flavor takes about six months to develop. Hersh claims that blackberry has been a high-demand soda flavor in the beverage industry for quite some time, so many of their customers love GuS’s light blackberry soda.

Today, Grown Up Soda has successfully appeared at numerous expos and benefits. Although one may find the product at a local store, http://drinkgus.com/ also provides a retailer and distributor locator for those who have trouble finding GuS. (A bonus on their site is the list of mixed drink recipes that one can put together with GuS sodas.) And for those that prefer to buy soda online, you can do so at our very own Specialty Sodas website. If you ever thought you needed to stop drinking soda, perhaps a healthier beverage line like GuS’s would serve as a better alternative.
