Swamp Pop

Swamp Pop

Founded in 2013, Swamp Pop was created in Lafayette, Louisiana by cousins John Petersen and Collin Cormier. Being the owner of a food truck, Cormier noticed the popularity of cane sugar sodas. Inspired by the sugarcane farming history of their state, Petersen and Cormier decided to make their own naturally-flavored beverage line, Swamp Pop sodas. They chose the name “Swamp Pop” as a tribute to the southern Louisiana music genre of the late 1950s. As they experimented with different bubbly concoctions, the duo knew they were onto something. However, they could not predict just how successful Swamp Pop would get. When they did an initial run of about 144,000 bottles for the first year, they ended up selling four times that amount. And the second year? 15% more than that.

Bottled in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Swamp Pop Premium Sugarcane Sodas are available across the United States on shelves of countless retailers. The soda list contains six signature flavors: Filé Root Beer, Ponchatoula Pop Rouge, Noble Cane Cola, Satsuma Fizz, Praline Cream Soda, and Jean Lafitte Ginger Ale. Peterson claims the cream soda is their most popular flavor, but customers love the strawberry as well. Part of the products’ appeal is that each 12 oz bottle contains Louisiana ingredients besides cane sugar, such as strawberries or satsuma extract. In addition, the use of glass bottles provides the feel of a high-quality American soda.

If you were to visit their website, http://drinkswamppop.com/, you’d discover numerous mixed drink recipes which they call “poptails”. Ginger ale is a favorite mixer, providing options such as The Pimmger, which includes Swamp Pop Jean Lafitte Ginger Ale, liqueur, strawberries, cucumber and ginger. Another refreshing option is The Sunburn, consisting of Swamp Pop Ponchatoula Pop Rouge mixed with vodka, basil and lemon. And if you send them your own creation, they may just feature it on their page.

As of 2015, Swamp Pop has been sold in 34 states. The soda company has visited fests such as the Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival Inc and the Food Innovation Summit, even making appearances in the trailer for 10 Cloverfield Lane. If you want to know where to buy Swamp Pop drinks, the company’s website provides a retailer locator.
